Various awards for actions of excellence, charitable actions and generosity have been presented in New York over the last few weeks. One such accolade – the 2017 Happy Warrior Award – was presented to John K. Castle of Castle Harlan for his philanthropic endeavors in health and education. It was given to him by The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization which seeks to “bring hope to the neediest children of the Archdiocese of New York, regardless of race, creed or color.”
Meanwhile Latham & Watkins Partner, Kevin McDonough, was named Attorney of the Year by the New York Law Journal during a ceremony at the TriBeCa Rooftop. He received this award for his “tremendous pro bono practice, particularly his role as chief legal counsel to the Independent Commission on New York City Criminal Justice & Incarceration Reform [given the task of] reimaging New York’s approach to incarceration and retooling its criminal justice system.”
At this year’s 2017 Ernesto Illy International Coffee Awards, a group of individual coffee producers were recognized at the UN Headquarters in New York City (together with an evening gala at the New York Public Library). In addition, an award for the “best of the best” was given to coffee producers from the farm of José Abelardo Díaz Enamorado and his wife, Daysi Clemencia Reyes. Costa Rican Juan Carlos Alvarez received the “Coffee Lovers Choice” award, from local New York Food & Wine Festival participating voters.
